Reduce Food Waste Using Robotics and AI

It is estimated that roughly one-third of the food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. Given the impending climate change crisis, any additional extractive pressure on the earth seems unsustainable. We believe that reducing food waste is a critical element for feeding our planet. To that end we are pursuing projects to use technologies like robotics and AI to reduce food waste.

We are in the process of curating and prototyping robotic systems for reducing food waste across the food supply chain. Click here for a working paper that reports our progress on this work stream.

Save Imperfect Foods

In the developed world, an obsession with aesthetically perfect food encourages significant wastage throughout the food supply chain. This results in significant amounts of perfectly edible produce being thrown away. For instance, close to 30 % of edible carrots don’t make it to grocery stores because of physical or aesthetic defects. In this work stream, we are building AI and robotic technologies to reduce this wastage.
